The Union Bank story begins In November of 1904 when we were chartered as the People’s Banking Company of Kalida. Our current name, The Union Bank, was adopted almost three decades later, in 1932, when a Depression-era decision to relaunch two Columbus Grove banks under the People’s Banking charter resulted in the “union” of the two Putnam County communities. In 1985, Union Bank formed a holding company under the name of United Bancshares, Inc. (“United”). The Union Bank stayed a small Putnam County bank until the 1990s, when it began expanding across the region. The bank kicked off its current cycle of growth in 1991 with the opening of a branch in Ottawa. Three years later, we opened our first Allen County branch, on Elida Road in Lima. A second Lima branch was opened on Bellefontaine Avenue in 1998, followed in 2000 with the opening of a downtown Lima office. In the years that followed, Union Bank continued to grow. The Bank of Leipsic and the Citizens Bank of Delphos joined the Union Bank family in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Each bank operated under separate names and charters until 2003 when both the Leipsic and Delphos charters were merged into the Union Bank charter. In 2003, we expanded into Pemberville and Bowling Green in Wood County and Gibsonburg in Sandusky County. A Shawnee Township branch was added to the Lima lineup in 2008, followed in 2010 with an office in Findlay. In 2014, Union Bank acquired the former Ohio State Bank, adding two branches in Marion and one in Lewis Center. 2017 brought the acquisition of Benchmark Bank, and the addition of new offices in Gahanna and Westerville. Today, The Union Bank has 17 branches covering nine counties and offering banking convenience for customers throughout Northwest and Central Ohio. In addition to our convenient offices, The Union Bank Company offers a full range of commercial banking services, including checking accounts, savings and money market accounts; time certificates of deposit; automatic teller machines; commercial, consumer, agricultural, residential mortgage loans and home equity loans; safe deposit rentals; and other personalized banking services to fit your needs.
